Broadway Tomorrow opens its 25th year celebrations revisiting musicals that have been previewed in concert or full productions over the years with a visual of “The Perils of Paul,” a comic pop opera of the travels of the apostle Paul.  Described this way in Tom Poster’s Page Six: Daily News Column: People

Who Came First, Pauline or Paul?

What came, “The Perils of Pauline” or “The Perils of Paul?”  Elyse Curtis tells all in her new pop opera that can be seen July 20-23 at the Phipps Plaza Theatre on Second Ave.  Described as a “no frills-no million dollar budget” production, it has music by Elyse’s husband, Norman, and boasts a “cast of thousands” played by a handful of performers.  Karl Wahrheit who plays Paul, finds that being an apostle isn’t all fun and games.  “Perils of Paul” is sponsored by a grant from the State Council on the Arts.

Broadway Tomorrow Celebrates

20th Anniversary & Alumni Reunion

·        Alumni Took A Nostalgic Look Back and Previewed Their New Musicals

·        Here I Stand and Straight to the Ace Receive Broadway Tomorrow Awards

On October 25th Broadway Tomorrow celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a nostalgic look at some of the 70 musicals presented over the years and got a preview of new musicals from its alumni: Michael Colby and Jack Urbont, Chuck Muckle and David Eisner and Anita Hollander. At this celebration, the Broadway Tomorrow award, the Oliver, was presented to Edward Kenny and Val Angrosini for their productions of Straight to the Ace and to Anita Hollander for the production of Here I Stand.  The Special Award was presented to Norman Curtis for 20 years of service as the house musical director. The evening was hosted by Artistic Director, Elyse Curtis.

In what turned out to be a metaphor for the celebration and reunion, Chuck Muckle reprised the song “Home Again,” from  Electra the Untold Story (now Mourning Becomes Ridiculous), which he and David Eisner previewed at Broadway Tomorrow on Feb 17, 1986.  He also previewed “Wake Up and Love Me” from his newest musical, Starboard Home, which was recently previewed at Sardis and the Triade.

Anita Hollander, who also appeared in Electra the Untold Story, sang the title song from her musical, Here I Stand, which had been previewed on Jan 20 1986.  She also sang “Something We Already Know” from her new musical, Walking To Canada and previewed “Better Late Than Never” from Michael Colby [Book & Lyrics] and Jack Urbont’s [Music] new musical, By the Mississippi.

Sam Scardino reprised his song, “A Happy Tune,” from Dues, with book & additional lyrics and music by Elyse Curtis, which previewed at Broadway Tomorrow February, 1984.

Before the evening ended, we remembered some of our alumni have moved on to other stages in other realms.   Norman Curtis paid tribute to Ellie Serena by singing “Nah Zdorvyeh” from her musical, Akulina, as we remember the contributions of their talents as singers, lyricists, librettists, composers and directors:

Cynthia Belgrave, who directed Where is Soul Mate and performed in and directed Broadway Sampler March 18, 1985

Townsend T. Brewster – wrote the Book & Lyrics for, Mascara and Confetti a musical set in New Orleans at Madi Gras.

Jon Delfin – Musical director for Here I Stand, Jan. 1984.

Lila Levant – Wrote the Book and Lyrics for, Any Body’s Child, Oct 24, 1983, Book of Levant by Levant, featuring the songs of her cousin Oscar Levant, Nov 14, 1983, One More Ride on the Merry-Go-Round.

Tony Michael Pann  - Wrote Lyrics and performed in One More Ride on the Merry-Go-Round previewed Oct. 10, 1983, Directed Levant by Levant

Ellie Serena – Wrote the lyrics and music for Akulina, Nov 12,19,26, 1984, The Second Big Horse, and Phineas Finn, Nov 7, 1987

Donald Lee Taylor – Played the lead of Peter in Good Intentions, by Elyse Curtis April 7, 1986

Karl Wahrheit, Sang in The Great Conway by Virgil Engeran, Oct. 88, and played the title role in The Perils of Paul, 7/23/89

Charles LaVont Williams – Directed Yvonne Warden in The Silver Fox July 26, 1986

Jack Eric Williams – Wrote the Music and Lyrics for Mrs. Farmer’s Daughter, a musical about the film star Frances Farmer.  The book was by Jack, Tom O’Horgan (of Hair fame) and Joseph Stockdale) Oct 17, 1983.

About Broadway Tomorrow

Twenty years ago Broadway Tomorrow brought an innovation to musical theatre when Artistic Director, Elyse Curtis created the concert preview genre.  In the past 20 years she has provided a venue for the presentation of hundreds of new musicals and created opportunities for composers, librettists, lyricists, directors, musical directors and performers to showcase their work and talents.

Since its premier, many of the alumni have moved on to Broadway including Veanne Cox, Sharon Scruggs and Lorraine Goodman.   On October 23rd. Cheryl Stern opened on Broadway in Jackie Mason’s Laughing Room Only.  Currently, Alan Menken, who received the first Award and went on to win Oscars for his Disney scores, is returning to Broadway with his award-winning Little Shop of Horrors and friend of BT, Maury Yeston’s Nine, with Antonio Banderas repeated its Tony winning streak.  Other alumni have moved to Off Broadway, Regional Theatre and Off Off Broadway and Song of Singapore, starring Donna Murphy, created its own venue.  Most recently, alumni Van Dirk Fisher’s Gospel Musical, Somebody’s Calling My Name ran at the Heckscher Theatre and alumni Polly Pen’s musical Embarrassments begins previews in November at the Wilma Theater in Philadelphia.   Go to Top

Best of Broadway Tomorrow to be Reprised

As we enter our 21st year, Broadway Tomorrow plans to reprise the best of the musicals previewed over the past 20 years that are still aspiring to   Broadway.   Composers are invited to submit their work for reprise.  We will also be presenting new musicals for preview.   Our main interest as usual is in transpersonal, transformative or historical musicals presented in good taste.
