ARE Remembrances – Nell Claremonte and Shane Miller

“These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks

that stood before the God of the earth.” (Rev. 11:4)

Nell Claremonte and Shane Miller were longtime friends from the art community. They remained that way over the years and after their respective spouses passed on. Both Nell and Shane were members of the Wednesday night Prayer for Healing Group at the first NY ARE affiliate located on 16th Street in Chelsea and of the council, both of which I also became active with.  It was a privileged to have known and served with them, to have experienced their loving kindness and to have learned from their mentorship.  As the longest serving council member in both affiliates, I am pleased to pass on some brief recollections of these two remarkable people.

Nell Clairmonte

Nell was the first person I contacted at the New York Center on the phone after my first visit to the ARE in Virginia Beach in the early 1960’s.  When I met her, she lived in the village among the avant garde artists from Hemingway’s generation and had long straight black hair.  She was like my spiritual mother and we remained in contact over the years even after she moved to Virginia Beach, where she was affectionately known as “Roadrunner” because she traveled throughout the regions for the ARE.  Her signature roadrunner cartoons appeared regularly in “Venture Inward” magazine.

When I decided to marry in Virginia Beach, Nell was the faithful “mother of the bride.”  She arranged for the place:  the Glad Helper’s meditation room upstairs in the old building on the hill that was Ruth LeNoir’s quarters.  She also arranged for the minister, Robert Krajenke, bought the cake and made sure I had something old something new, something borrowed and something blue.  I loved Nell dearly and miss her terribly, but am visited by her in my dreams.

Shane Miller

While Nell was like my spiritual mother, Shane was like my spiritual father with a wonderful sense of humor.  On my first visit to the ARE center on 16th St. to the Wednesday night Prayer for Healing Group, I sat next to Shane and immediately raised kundalini (the spiritual energy within) completely.  I thought the force was coming from Shane and always tried to sit next to him.  He knew what it was and joked about it over the years.  Like Nell, Shane was an artist by profession.  He was also an author, first published when he was in sixth grade!  He wrote and illustrated children’s books and scenes for animated movies and the historic books: Hammer of Gaul, Peter Stuyvesant’s Drummer and Life Long Ago: The Romans.  He had a keen insight into symbology and a firm understanding of the Bible, both of which were combined in his booklet, The Bible as a Handbook for Understanding Self, which, unfortunately is now out of print.  I also loved Shane dearly and miss him.

Shane’s Paintings and Ilustrations -  Camelot

Shane was quite an accomplished artist who combined his love and understanding of symbology with his art to produce a series of magnificent paintings on the Arthurian Legend of Camelot.

As a Master’s project at Atlantic University, I interviewed Shane in Virginia Beach on tape about his paintings.  The interview entitled Camelot Within preserves his work for posterity.

Jesus

Daniel Livingston reported that Shane said when he was working on the painting of Jesus he dreamt that Jesus appeared to him and showed him what color his hair should be, which coincided greatly with the description given to Cayce: red and curly like David’s.  (Probably more like Michelangelo’s, in which David’s hair is curly.)

Shane gave me this copy of the finished painting on which he wrote an endearing message on the back.  The eyes, which also match the steel blue description, are striking.

Nell, Shane, the NY ARE and Its Unique The Revelation Legacy

Both Nell and Shane were a part of the   NY ARE research group that worked on the 24 Cayce discourses on the Revelation over a seven-year period that resulted in publication of  A Commentary on the Revelation

Shane also illustrated and narrated a series of slides “The Story of Revelation.

An Angel Unaware?

One of my favorite Shane stories is about the man who came to the center on 16th Street one night when they were working on the “Commentary.”  They told him the center was closed and there was no group that night, but the man pleaded to come in any way.  As it happened, they were stuck on an interpretation.  The man gave them the answer and then left!

The Commentary on the 24 Cayce Discourses on The Revelation and the slide presentation are unique contributions by the first NY ARE.  Unfortunately, the Commentary is out of print, however, the vibrations from those seven years of research were waiting for me when I moved into the center and soon materialized in music, drama and theology.  (See links below for more.)

Planting a Tree for Nell and Shane

“on either side of the river was there the tree of life”

 Rev – 22.2

Shortly after the new second ARE of NY affiliate moved to 30th Street in 2004, I had a dream wroth with symbols in which I heard a voice say: “Plant a tree for Nell and a tree for Shane.”   This command, to plant two trees, of course, had a dual meaning.  It could be symbolic or literal.  I found that it was both and wrote about it in my News Updates:
