Demystifying The Term

Great White Brotherhood

Every time I heard someone say, “The Great White Brotherhood,” usually with reverence and awe, a kind of chill would run down my spine as images of white robed, pointy-hatted discarnate KKK’s flashed through my mind.  Something felt wrong and foreboding.  It did not feel like a phrase meant to bring people together, but one meant to separate.  It seemed to me that these implied “ascended masters” should know that the connotations of a name like that would be scary and offensive to the majority of the world’s population.  I tried in vain to accept the rationalization I heard that what was really meant was “Light.”  However, if they were indeed “Enlightened Ascended Masters,” shouldn’t they have conveyed that they were the “Great Light Brotherhood” to those espousing their existence?   In any event, I put the subject to the back of my consciousness in hopes that it would be clarified someday.

A couple of weeks ago, a young lady, whom I knew, came into the ARE of NY bookstore and said she had been to the ARE center in Virginia Beach.  Then she proceeded to tell me a story I had heard many times before about Virginia Beach being a center of the “Great White Brotherhood” as I relived the scary vision of the discarnate KKK’s.  Two weeks later, a young man, who had also recently been to the ARE center in Virginia Beach, told me the same thing.   That was twice in close proximity.  The saying is that three times, God speaks, so I decided to seek the third voice through research of the subject.

A little Googling turned up a multitude of mentions of the scary, politically incorrect “White Brotherhood” on the pages of various New Agey organizations that each appeared to lay special claim to them.  At least one gave “Brotherhood of Light” as a secondary name, but that did not absolve the use of the term or eliminate its subtle damaging effect on the mass consciousness.

I admired the work of Edgar Cayce, whose passion, The Bible, I share.  Considering that the quote impelling my research was attributed to one of his discourses, I decided to focus on the information that he received from the Akashic records (the biblical Book of Life).

Bottom Line

1.     It is “Brotherhood,” but was sometimes called White Brotherhood in the present [1010-17] (June 21, 1942) and [5748-5] (June 30, 1932), especially by those asking the questions.

Both 1010-17 and 5748-5 were given before the consciousness in this country began to change through the efforts of those who endeavored to eliminate harmful and superior leaning rhetoric. However, the confusion and hurt it could cause was obvious to Edgar Cayce’s son, Hugh Lynn, who voiced his concern in a letter to Mr. [699] excerpted in 254-83 R:

12/22/67 ...The White Brotherhood is a metaphysical term used in esoteric circles. Highly developed entities living in and outside the earth are supposed to assist with the physical and spiritual problems of the world. In my opinion many of these points of view are rather loosely held and exaggerated and extravagant terms or statements are made frequently about them. This has nothing to do with black or white, brown or red. Edgar Cayce's statements on the race question are clearly set forth in the booklet, TIMES OF CRISIS. They are stated so clearly, in fact, that I don't think they could possibly be misunderstood. "For He hath made of one blood the nations of the earth." (TIMES OF CRISIS, page 34)

In the Edgar Cayce readings themselves there is only a casual reference to the concept of the White Brotherhood. There is no definition or no details at all. In fact, there were no questions asked about it that brought out any detailed descriptions.

So far as establishing
Virginia Beach as a center for the White Brotherhood, no claims are made by the A.R.E. that this is the case. Actually, we are carrying on a research and educational program in the broad field of psychical research using the Edgar Cayce readings as a basis for studies, lectures, conferences and experimentation.

I hope this clears the matter up a bit. If you have further questions don't hesitate to write me.

Sincerely, Hugh Lynn Cayce”

(Mr. [699], a 34 year old physicist, who was interested in managing Edgar Cayce had requested the 254 series.   The involvement of the Ballard I AM movement with the attempt to re-direct the work appears to have heralded the end of that idea.)

See  The Final Word” at the end. )

There were 60 discourses given that mentioned “Brotherhood.”  Several of them had nothing to do with the angelic realm, but spoke of the brotherhood of man and the fatherhood of God.   One [587-6] said that John was the head of the Brotherhood.

Of the 60, 11 mentioned “White Brotherhood,” mostly initiated by the questioner.

The Masters directing them were defined as “Messengers from the higher forces that may manifest from the Throne of Grace itself.”  (254-83). (Also see 257-88 to understand what the Throne of Grace is.)

One [845-6], said that she had been one in the Ohum and Og experience. (It is speculated that this refers to the Aymaras, a spiritual people in South America, who wear only white and are still extant.)

The one  that propelled my research, which was given for a 66-year old female writer on August 13, 1941,  is the one most often quoted that was referred to by the two people:

 45. (Q) Is Virginia Beach to be safe?  (A) It is the center - and the only seaport and center - of the White Brotherhood.   [1152-11]

What is not clear here is whether the reference is to Angelic beings on the spiritual realm or those at the Center who had been involved in the Essene order, because “Brotherhood” also referred to those in the physical that were part of a spiritual order.  The Great Pyramid was described as a place of initiation of John and Jesus into the Brotherhood in [5748-5], while both were very much alive. That same discourse alternatively used “White Brotherhood,” and said that the Essenes were considered of the brotherhood.

Final word

Trying to contact those “masters” limits one

Both the Bible and Cayce direct us to seek The Master of Masters

10. (Q) If Mr. Cayce is a member and a messenger of the Great White Brotherhood, how do the Masters wish him to proceed and should not his activities henceforth be presented as Their Work?

(A) As the work of the MASTER of masters, that may be presented when in those lines, those accords necessary through the White Brotherhood. This - this - THIS, my friends, even but LIMITS; while in Him is the Whole. Would thou make of thyself, of thyselves, a limited means of activity? Would thou seek to be hindered by those things that have made of many contending forces that continue to war one with another even in the air, even in the elemental forces? For He, thy Lord, thy God, hath called thee by name, even as He has given, "Whosoever will drink the cup, even as of my blood, he may indeed be free." While ye labor, let HIM that is the author, that is the finisher, that IS the Life, that is the bread of life, that is the blood of life, let HIM alone be thy guide! Dost He call any soul into service, THEN by name will He - does He - designate, and to whom it becomes a charge to keep - even as he has walked with Him, this body that ye use as a channel of approach to the Throne; ye make of same oft as a laughingstock to thy very soul through thine own selfishness! Let the light of Him, thy Christ, thy God, IN, that it may cleanse thy body, that it may lighten thy soul, that it may purge thy mind, that ye will only be just gentle, just kind; not find fault with any, for with faults ye build BARRIERS to thine own soul's enlightenment.” “I, thy God, thy Christ, beseech thee!" 254-83
